Week 4

With nearly a month down we are on track for our official "opening" on the 3rd of December! The clean-up is going well and the frame is going up! The roof will be up by Friday!

The weeks to come we will be finishing off the gazebo, completing the de-reeding of cattail and ensuring the area around the lakes is clean. We will also be giving our jungle gym another fresh coat of teak oil and wrapping up any additional paint work required.

Green Belt - Fence Off

The dream was to close off the open area between Christiaan De Wet avenue and Witwatersrand area, to stop vagrants and squatters open access to our area.  That dream has now become a reality thanks to the support of everyone involved!

Special thanks to Shaun Niemand for the great support that he has provided to the Greenbelt fence project as he donated the fence poles and other materials.  The estimated costs for the donated material is about R 10,000.  We would also like to thank Hennie for running the project efficiently and the support he has provided.

The past few weeks saw the installation of a fence on top of the greenbelt area bordering Christiaan de Wet Road.

Because of such amazing community involvement – the fence is now complete, thus securing our suburb from Christiaan de Wet.

A subcommittee for this area now needs to be established. This committee will need to come up with a workable plan to:

  • Monitor the flow of people using this entrance to and from our suburb.
  • Have lighting installed that would make the total area visible in the evenings.
  • Arrange a fundraising initiative to have surveillance cameras installed to monitor the fence and any potential untoward activity in area. The cameras will form part of the existing camera network and is to be monitored by SRT.
  • Ensure the continuous maintenance and housekeeping of this area.

CCTV Cameras

The original idea was to have IP Cameras hosted in strategic points in our area, continuously recording activities. This means building a wireless network to stream video to a central recording server, so that we can gain footage of crime and potentially track suspicious movements.

LIFCO never laid out any capital for these cameras, but structured a deal with a supplier of the cameras where they would sell advertising space on the camera poles which would ultimately cover their capital outlay.

We have received numerous complaints about the surveillance cameras not working in the best way for the community and we've been told that a camera system, like this, only works if monitored by people in a central command center, 24x7... Part of a 24x7 service ensures that the cameras and recording equipment is continuously operational and dependable.

  • We are happy to report that they are all up and running and monitored by SRT.
  • Trevor Williams, the owner of Surveillance Security and ICT Architects SA will handle the installation and maintenance of the extra cameras that are to be rolled out.
  • We are presently in discussions with WIRUlink to handle the networking infrastructure. At present because of our hilly terrain it is a challenge to have efficient footage.  WIRUlink have sufficient network base stations. This would result in our whole suburb receiving network coverage.

Green Belt - Outdoor Gym & Park

The dream is to create an outdoor gym/workout area and children’s park.

Latest Update

23/10/2016

LIFCO has had very constructive discussions with Mike Shomalistos, the owner of the Strubensvalley shopping centre.

  • Mike has offered to make a section of his stand (presently the old builders’ yard) available to LIFCO for:
  • Secure parking for the residents that want to make use of the “outdoor gym” and or also utilise the greater park for running, cycling, walking dogs (on a leash) etc.
  • Construct an outdoor gym area.
  • Install a Kiddies playground.
  • Have CCTV cameras installed and monitored on a 24/7 basis by SRT.

The idea is to have a secure fenced area exclusively for the use of the residents.  A secure turnstile gate will be installed.

We are grateful to Mike that he offered to be part of this exciting project – it is such a generous offer!

Mike is presently finalising discussions with Spar Head Office for the upgrading of the present Spar shop.

We will keep you updated.

We are grateful to Mike for his commitment to both our plans and the community as a whole!  In ongoing meetings with him (this week we already had two meetings), more details will emerge and a sub-committee will be formed to handle this phase of the project.
